چکیده

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic disease of unknown origin that predominantly involves synovial tissue. RA affects 0.5% of the global population, with a clear predilection for women. Conventional radiography (plain radiographs or X-rays) is the most widely used imaging technique for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of RA. Advanced imaging techniques (e.g. magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound, and nuclear scintigraphy), that are better suited for detecting soft-tissue inflammation are available, but they are more costly and some of them may expose the patient to higher doses of radiation. Plain film radiographs are inexpensive, easy to generate, can be compared with baseline and prospective films, and provide a permanent, reproducible record. The plain radiographs of the hands and feet can detect the features that are specific to RA such as joint space narrowing or erosions, and serial radiography can be used as a objective marker for monitoring treatment response in clinical trials. This review discusses the use of conventional radiography for diagnosing and detecting early structural changes in joints and providing a historical overview of commonly used methods of scoring radiographs in RA.

Ultrasonography in rheumatoid arthritis: what rheumatologists should know.

Ultrasonography has recently gained prestige as an adjuvant method for the diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up of rheumatoid arthritis, although radiography remains the imaging modality traditionally and widely used for those purposes. The great advantage of the ultrasonographic study, which has motivated enthusiastic research in the area, resides in its capacity to detect synovitis and bone er...

Surgery in Rheumatoid Arthritis Effects of Synovectomy and Application of Autologous Vaccine

Early Synovectomy is advisable for rheumatoid arthritis. An autologus vaccine from the excised synovia can be prepared from the tis- sues and given to the patient for at least 2 years or even longer in order to arrest the disease and for prevent relapse.  The patient can be taught to give himself his own vaccine two times weekly. While there is possibility of an antianaphylactic reaction. F...

Conventional radiography requires a MRI-estimated bone volume loss of 20% to 30% to allow certain detection of bone erosions in rheumatoid arthritis metacarpophalangeal joints

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the ability of conventional radiography to detect bone erosions of different sizes in metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the standard reference. A 0.2 T Esaote dedicated extremity MRI unit was used to obtain axial and coronal T1-weighted gradient echo images of the dominant 2nd...
